Nancy University Hospital - CHRU de Nancy
Supported by the expertise of its university hospital teams and state-of-the-art medical and technical platforms, the Nancy University Hospital stands out as a key player in medical and paramedical research, consistently making headlines in national and international scientific communities.
By 2023, the Nancy University Hospital achieved remarkable milestones: over 1,000 scientific articles published, 827 research projects conducted, and 360 new studies actively managed in collaboration with academic sponsors and industry partners. Nearly 3,300 patients participated in research protocols within the establishment. The Nancy University Hospital responded to 11 national project calls in 2022, winning twice. In the Grand Est inter-regional zone, it submitted nine projects in 2023, including one paramedical initiative, securing seven successful outcomes from the 2022 submissions.
The Nancy University Hospital has a business project hotel, an innovative space for hosting and housing healthcare start-ups, inaugurated on the Brabois hospital site in 2019. Named IRIS (Institut de Recherche et d’Innovation en Santé) Valley, this platform was created as part of the State – Greater Nancy Metropolis innovation pact, with 3 ambitious objectives :
- Develop multidisciplinary projects with strong economic and commercial potential to support the Nancy University Hospital’s research and innovation initiatives.
- Initiate public/private collaborations and cultivate a robust network to drive the creativity, agility, and efficiency required by start-ups. Start-ups gain unique access to doctors, engineers, patients, and healthcare professionals, as well as privileged use of the Nancy University Hospital’s advanced equipment.
- To reaffirm the pivotal role of the Nancy University Hospital in advancing health research within the Henri-Poincaré Technopole, serving the region while enhancing the appeal and influence of the Nancy metropolitan area across the Grand Est region.
As a key player in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for healthcare and their economic applications, the Nancy University Hospital continues to drive its digital transformation. Examples of AI-driven innovations already implemented to enhance hospital services include: AI at the patient’s bedside with the IntelliVue Guardian solution, high-performance scanners, and a predictive algorithm for heart failure.
The hospital is also a founding member of the Infiny University Hospital Institute (IHU), dedicated to inflammatory bowel diseases.
The Nancy CHRU ranks among the top 5 university hospitals in France.
Université de Lorraine
The Université de Lorraine is a public higher education institution that comprises 10 scientific clusters with 60 laboratories and 9 collegiums, encompassing 43 training units, including 11 engineering schools. It has 7,000 staff members and 62,000 students.
Health is a major societal challenge and a priority for both teaching and research at the Université de Lorraine. From undergraduate diplomas to doctoral degrees, the University offers state-recognized qualifications in medicine, midwifery, health professions, dentistry, pharmacy, physical activity and sports sciences. Health research at the Lorraine site is multidisciplinary and translational, driven by 60 laboratories. This intensive research harnesses Lorraine’s strengths beyond the biological and medical sciences, integrating digital technology, engineering, and social sciences. Research in health is structured around three internationally recognized fields: cardiovascular and renal diseases, metabolic diseases and obesity, and chronic inflammatory diseases. These efforts have led to the creation of three university hospital federations.
This collective momentum is reflected in the IHU project, developed in partnership with the Greater Nancy Metropolitan Area, INSERM, and the Nancy University Hospital. As a major regional stakeholder, the Université de Lorraine is naturally committed to this large-scale initiative, aimed at shaping the medicine of the future to better address patients’ needs.

INSERM
Founded in 1964, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) is a public scientific and technological institution operating under the joint authority of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and the Ministry of Solidarity and Health. Inserm is the only French public organization dedicated to biological, medical, and human health research, covering the entire process from laboratory research to patient care. Its researchers focus on studying all diseases, from the most common to the rarest.
METROPOLE DU GRAND NANCY
With an urban area of around 500,000 inhabitants, the Greater Nancy Metropolis is just 90 minutes from Paris by TGV, at the heart of the European cross-border region. Its research laboratories enjoy global recognition, notably the Institut Jean Lamour, one of Europe’s leading laboratories in materials engineering. In the same vein, the Brabois science and medical technology park hosts 300 establishments, 2,000 teacher-researchers, and major national research institutes.
In the healthcare sector, the Metropolis is committed to enhancing access to care for all and addressing social and regional health inequalities. It has positioned itself as a regional leader through the Local Health Contract, providing financial backing for projects and ensuring urban development initiatives account for health impacts. The Metropolis also collaborates with local healthcare professionals to improve access to primary care, in response to the ageing healthcare workforce (46% of GPs are over 55), evolving practice models, and an ageing population with a high prevalence of chronic diseases.
